Why We Chose Southeastern Africa Over the Obvious Beach Destinations

Every traveller has a beach shortlist.

Mine changes over the years, but the core has been the same for a long time. The classics. The dream destinations you keep on a mental sticky note, telling yourself "one day, one of them."

Zanzibar. Seychelles. Sri Lanka. Bali. Cap Vert. Even St Bart, on the days when I forget I'm not that kind of rich.

For years, every time I planned a beach-focused trip, I opened that list. And every year, I ended up choosing somewhere else, SNOW rather than beach. This November, I made the choice consciously. We are not going to any of them. We are going somewhere in Southeastern Africa instead.

Here's the honest reasoning behind that decision.

1. Zanzibar — On the list. Just not this trip.

Zanzibar is still on the list. Very much on the list. It probably always will be.

The white sand, the spice culture, the mix of Arab and Swahili history. It's a destination that fits everything I love in a place. I know friends who have come back completely in love with it.

Why not this year ? Two reasons. One, I want to give Zanzibar its own trip when the time is right, not squeeze it into a slot I already had for a different kind of adventure. Two, the region I've chosen this year offers something Zanzibar doesn't offer as easily : a level of quiet that I've been craving for a long time.

Zanzibar is a "soon." This year isn't its year.

2. Seychelles — Nim has been. I haven't. Both are true.

Seychelles is a strange one for us as a couple.

Nim has been several times, at different points in his life. I have never set foot there. So on paper, Seychelles is next in line for me. And I do want to see it, badly. The granite rocks, the impossible blue, the specific texture of a Seychellois sunset. I've watched him talk about all of it enough times to know I'll love it too.

But because he has already been, this trip needed to be ours. A place neither of us knew. Where neither of us could say "last time I was here I did that." Somewhere that would be equally new for both.

Seychelles is coming. Just not this time.

3. Sri Lanka — I want to. Deeply.

Sri Lanka has been in my head for years. Everything about it calls to me. The tea plantations. The trains through the hills. The temples. The food. The honest kindness people describe when they come back.

It's a full trip. It deserves two weeks of undivided attention. Not a compromise slot in a schedule already leaning towards something else.

Sri Lanka is on our two-year horizon. This year wasn't going to be the year to shortchange it.

4. Bali — No.

Bali is my exception on the list.

Not because it isn't beautiful. Everyone who has been says it is. But because too many people have been. Because my Instagram feed has been Bali for the last eight years. Because every rice terrace, every temple gate, every infinity pool, every yoga mat has been photographed a million times before I could get there.

I know myself. I know I would arrive in Bali already tired of the version of it I've already seen. That's not the fault of Bali. It's the fault of the internet.

I don't do destinations I've already visited on my phone.

5. Cap Vert and St Bart — The margins of the list.

Cap Vert was on the list because of the music. Because of the Cesária Évora energy that comes off the islands. Because of that specific West African cool that I've never experienced in person. It's still a maybe. Just not now.

St Bart, I'll be honest. I'm not quite that kind of rich, and I'm allergic to spaces that make me pretend to be. If a place requires me to perform wealth to enjoy it, I've already lost. St Bart stayed on the list mostly as a joke between Nim and me.

6. What Made Southeastern Africa Win

Three words that decided it.

Every one of those destinations above is beautiful. Every one of them will get its year eventually. So what made me choose Southeastern Africa this November over any of them ?

Three words.

Authentic. Peu connu. Inexploré.

Authentic, because I wanted a place that hasn't been packaged for tourism yet. Where what you see is what actually is. Where the culture isn't performed for you.

Peu connu, because I wanted a place my Instagram feed had not already spoiled. Where the first time I see it is when I'm standing in front of it. Not on my phone six months ago.

Inexploré, because I wanted to be a little early. To go somewhere that in ten years everyone will be writing about, and be able to say we saw it first, quietly, before it changed.

Those three words don't describe Zanzibar (already discovered), Seychelles (widely photographed), Sri Lanka (well-known), Bali (over-documented), Cap Vert (a lot more known than we admit), or St Bart (peak-luxury visible).

They describe Southeastern Africa perfectly.

7. The Thing You Can Only Do There

Some experiences don't have a substitute anywhere else in the world.

Here is the honest test I applied when choosing between destinations.

"What can I do here that I can't do anywhere else?"

Zanzibar : gorgeous beaches, but a version of that beach exists in 30 other countries.

Seychelles : granite rocks, but you can find something close in a few other Indian Ocean spots.

Bali : rice terraces, yoga, warm hospitality. All replicated worldwide now.

Southeastern Africa passed the test with a completely different answer.

There are experiences on this trip that exist nowhere else in the same way. A specific kind of untouched coastline that gets photographed maybe once a year by a drone. Sand islands that shift with the tide. A wildlife density inland that other destinations promise and don't deliver. A silence at 5am on a bush morning that has no equivalent.

That's the difference. Not that it's more beautiful than the others. But that the beauty is unrepeatable elsewhere.

The Real Answer

I love the beach destinations on my shortlist. Every one of them will still be there when their time comes.

But this year, I wanted a first-mover trip. A place I wasn't following anyone into. A place where the drone shots I've been saving for months don't have 200,000 identical copies from 200,000 different accounts.

Southeastern Africa was the answer.

The best travel decisions are not always about picking the best destination. Sometimes they are about picking the right destination at the right moment in its own history.

Zanzibar is coming. Seychelles is coming. Sri Lanka is coming. Bali is not.

This November, we go somewhere else. Somewhere the world hasn't quite arrived at yet.

I'll tell you exactly where in a few weeks.
