During our planning for activities in Stockholm, we came across an intriguing experience: Stockholm: Nordic Ice Skating for Beginners on a Frozen Lake, available via GetYourGuide. The idea of skating on a natural frozen lake instantly captivated us, and we booked it for 280 euros (3,215 Swedish Krona) for the two of us. Little did we know this would become one of the most unforgettable adventures of our trip!

A Warm Welcome and A Weather Surprise

Before the activity, we received a series of emails from our guide, Simas, asking for our shoe sizes and any dietary restrictions. However, the evening before the skating day, Simas informed us that due to warmer weather, the lakes around Stockholm weren’t frozen solid enough for safe skating. He reassured us that he would drive further north to scout better conditions and would confirm the activity later that night. True to his word, we received an email confirming that everything was set for the next day. Our excitement was through the roof!

The Journey to Björklinge

The following morning, we were warmly greeted by Simas and his friend Paulius. After a quick introduction to the small group joining us, we set off on a one-hour drive to Björklinge, a picturesque area further north of Stockholm. Upon arrival, the scenery was breathtaking. The pristine frozen lake, surrounded by serene Nordic landscapes, looked like something out of a winter dream.

Gearing Up and First Steps

Simas gave us a detailed safety briefing before equipping us with all the necessary gear: ice skates designed for the lake, waterproof backpacks, and essential safety accessories. As we reached the lake, the clear ice sparkled in the sunlight, and we could see straight to the bottom—even spotting little fish swimming below. It was surreal.

When it came time to attach the blades to our boots, I immediately felt a surge of nerves. I managed to secure my skates, but my confidence quickly wavered after my first monumental fall—a dramatic start that had everyone laughing! Slowly but surely, I regained my balance and began to find my rhythm. The stunning views around us made every step worth the effort. On one side of the lake, we saw locals engaging in ice fishing, drilling small holes into the frozen surface, an activity that seemed so unique and quintessentially Nordic.

The Challenge and Reward

The initial glide across the lake felt exhilarating, but the return trip proved much more challenging as we skated against the wind. Every muscle in our bodies was tested as we pushed through, laughing at the occasional slips and falls. Nim took a couple of tumbles along the way, but he soldiered on like a champ! By the end of our 2-hour and 30-minute skating adventure, we were both exhausted but immensely proud of ourselves.

A Cozy Nordic Picnic

Back at our starting point, Simas had prepared a delightful picnic for the group. We gathered around a table laden with hot chocolate, tea, coffee, pastries, and baguettes. The cozy atmosphere was perfect for sharing stories and getting to know our fellow skaters, who hailed from France, United States, and of course us, Mauritius. The conversations were lively and heartwarming, reminding us how travel brings people together.

To top it all off, Simas lit a campfire, and we roasted marshmallows under the crisp winter sky. It was such a simple yet magical moment that added to the charm of the day.

Ice Fishing Demonstration

Before wrapping up, Simas and Paulius gave us a demonstration of ice fishing, showing us how they drill holes into the glacier to catch fish.

Back to Stockholm… and Straight to Bed!

We had ambitious plans to stroll through Stockholm’s charming streets and dine at a local restaurant after returning to the city. But after our adventure, we were utterly wiped out! We took an Uber back to the hotel, where a hot shower and a cozy bed awaited. Dinner plans shifted to ordering poke bowls through Foodora, which we enjoyed in the comfort of our room. It was the perfect way to end the day, reflecting on the incredible memories we had made.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

This Nordic ice skating adventure was unlike anything we had ever done. From gliding across a frozen lake to bonding with fellow travelers over a Nordic picnic, every moment felt extraordinary. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you, one that makes you grateful for the unpredictability and magic of travel. If you’re ever in Stockholm, don’t hesitate to step onto a frozen lake and create memories you’ll cherish forever.
